The Kurdistan Foundation has begun renovating two schools severely damaged by recent flash floods in the Chamchamal district and the city of Sulaimani, as affected communities continue to recover from the destruction caused by the disaster.
At the request of H.E. Areen Barzani, Founder of the Kurdistan Foundation, the organization has taken full responsibility for the restoration of Qandil School in the Takiya subdistrict of Chamchamal and Arin Boys’ School in Sulaimani. Both schools suffered extensive damage during the floods of early December, disrupting access to education for hundreds of students.
Initial assessments identified Qandil School as one of the most heavily affected educational facilities, with significant structural damage requiring full reconstruction. Restoration efforts extend beyond rebuilding the physical structures and include replacing essential educational materials such as furniture, desks, books, backpacks, and other student supplies to ensure classrooms can reopen as quickly as possible.
Following a field visit by the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Minister of Education and the leadership of the Kurdistan Foundation to Qandil School, a comprehensive damage assessment was completed, and reconstruction work was launched. Volunteer teams cleared debris from the school and prepared upper floors in advance of the rebuilding phase. Reconstruction work is also underway at Arin Boys’ School in Sulaimani, with both schools expected to resume educational activities as soon as conditions allow.
The floods struck the Kurdistan Region early December, with Chamchamal among the areas most severely affected. The disaster caused widespread damage to infrastructure, electricity outages, and disruptions to public services, resulting in casualties and injuries.
As part of the broader response to the floods, the Kurdistan Foundation has also supported emergency and humanitarian efforts in the affected areas, including assistance campaigns targeting families impacted by the disaster. These activities complement the Kurdistan Foundation’s focus on restoring essential public services, particularly education.
