The Kurdistan Foundation, though Climate.KRD and in partnership with the Zakho Independent Administration and hosted by the University of Zakho, organized the “A Step Toward a Green City” Conference on 29 July 2025, an initiative aimed at supporting efforts to transform Zakho into a more sustainable and environmentally friendly city.
The initiative brought together youth, experts, academics, and environmental activists to promote informed dialogue and practical approaches to climate action at the local level. It was designed to strengthen awareness, build capacity, and encourage community-driven solutions to environmental challenges.
On the first day of the initiative, 35 youth participants received targeted training on climate change, focusing on its causes, local impacts, and the role of young people in driving environmental responsibility. The training emphasized knowledge-building as a foundation for long-term environmental engagement.
The second day featured a conference composed of three expert-led panel discussions, addressing key themes critical to sustainable urban development. These panels focused on green urban planning and infrastructure, environmental protection and climate change mitigation, and community participation and the green economy. Speakers shared insights, best practices, and policy perspectives, highlighting the importance of cross-sector collaboration in achieving climate resilience.
The conference underscored the Kurdistan Foundation’s commitment to youth empowerment and environmental sustainability, reinforcing the role of education, dialogue, and community participation in shaping greener cities.
“A Step Toward a Green City” stands as a meaningful contribution to ongoing environmental efforts in Zakho, placing youth engagement and expert knowledge at the center of local climate action.
